EARNED SICK TIME ACT (ESTA)

- Mandated by the Michigan Legislature.
- Employees can earn one (1) hour for every thirty (30) hours worked.
- Hours are capped at 40 hours per year for small companies.
- Hours cannot be carried over, per the legislation.
- Hours are paid out at staff’s current wage.
- The Michigan ESTA does not require employers to pay out earned but unused sick time at the end of the year nor at termination or separation from the business.
- As there is no additional funding for these hours, the cost will have to be covered by the consumer’s budget. Wages may be affected due to the lack of funding and if that were to occur, the FI will reach out to discuss.
